Vintage Peruvian Carved Gourd Mate Burilado Signed Basilio Pomachahua Cochas Huancayo Folk Art 4.5”

good condition, see photos

This is a hand-carved and pyro-engraved mate burilado gourd from the famous folk-art carving center of Cochas in the Mantaro Valley near Huancayo, Peru. Signed by artisan Basilio Pomachahua on the lower band. It features multiple narrative scenes of everyday Andean village life — musicians, livestock, homes, plants, and traditional dress — all carved in dense storytelling bands wrapping the entire surface.
A beautiful example of Peruvian folk craftsmanship with excellent detail for a smaller piece.
Details:
- Origin: Cochas Chico / Cochas Grande, Huancayo, Peru
- Artist: Basilio Pomachahua (signed)
- Material: Natural dried gourd, carved & burned linework
- Height: approx. 4.5 inches
- Condition: Vintage. Some surface wear and small natural imperfections from age and handling (see photos) — adds character and authenticity.

This signed artisan piece displays beautifully and would make a wonderful addition to a Latin American or folk-art collection.
